About the Gallery
Gallery Philosophy

"Art for the home should be seen in a home."

We invite you to visit our collection of 19th and early 20th century paintings on display in the intimate setting of a private home. We are located in Middleton, Wisconsin, just outside Madison on the north side of Lake Mendota. The gallery may be visited afternoons and evenings by appointment, and there is never an obligation to buy.

The collection includes both European and American artists, with a selection of works in the Romantic, Barbizon, Impressionist, and Realistic styles. Landscapes in particular are well represented.

Our aim is to find affordable works by well-documented artists who were active between 1800 and 1940, though we also occasionally carry pieces by earlier and later artists.
"Affordable," of course, is a relative term. Not everyone can afford original art. However, some people spend thousands of dollars on furniture, and after ten or twelve years what they have is-old furniture. A painting can do more for a room than any sofa, and chances are that its value will increase.

An added benefit of a painting from a previous era is that it connects you to an earlier moment in time.

"A thing of beauty is a joy for ever:
Its loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness. . . ."
John Keats

Not that we recommend buying art as an investment; Keats to the contrary, Treasury Bonds are probably more secure.

The reason to buy art is to enjoy it. A fine painting will continue to give you pleasure, year after year.

Conditions of Sale

We guarantee the authenticity of the works we describe and list. To the extent possible, the gallery will provide artist information including biographical details, exhibition history, bibliographical references, museum holdings, etc.

A buyer may request a full refund (less shipping charges, both ways, if any) if not fully satisfied with a work for any reason, provided that notification of intent to return the work is given within seven days of the work's delivery and provided that the work is returned in the same condition in which it was sold.

After seven days, returns will be accepted only upon written notification by an art professional (museum, major gallery, or an academic familiar with the artist or period) that the painting was inaccurately described or was incorrectly attributed. In such an event, a full refund (less shipping charges, both ways, if any) will be given, subject to the return of the painting in the condition in which it was sold. This guarantee of authenticity may be invoked within a period of one year following the date of sale.

No representation is made with respect to the age or condition of frames. In most cases, older frames will show some scratches, scuffs, or losses of paint or gilt.

Wisconsin sales tax will be charged for works delivered within the state. Sales tax is waived for out of state deliveries.

Shipping may be arranged at the buyer's request.
