| James Patchell Chettle was a Manchester painter
exhibiting chiefly at the Royal Society
of
British Artists. He studied at the
Manchester
Academy and lived at The Cottage, Davenport
Park, Lancastershire. Chettle was elected
to the RBA in 1935 and later served
as President
of that Society. His work is represented in several museums, notably the Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery, Lancashire, U. K. and the Manchester Art Gallery (7 examples). The Peak Districtis a sparsely populated region of the low, rugged mountains running between Manchester in the west-central part of England and Sheffield to the east. Chettle captures the austere spirit of this landscape but softens the impression for the viewer with his light, pastel-tinted palette. References: K. Sauer, ed.
