Alix Jennings (Mrs.), née Thomson, was a portrait painter who exhibited a variety of subjects, including dogs, figures, and floral paintings. Her copy of an August John portrait of T. E. Shaw (Laurence of Arabia) hangs in the hallway of Jesus College, Oxford. (A letter from Alix Jennings to Winston Churchill offering this painting for sale is included in Churchill's papers, annotated "regretted.")

The painting "Air Raid Warden,"dated 1940, was sold by Hove Auctions in 2005, and a pair of King Charles Spaniels, dated 1948, was included in a 2002 sale of "Sporting Art and Dogs" at Christie's.

This pleasing still life has a crisp quality of fine detail and rich coloration and is painted with a natural touch by an artist at the height of her powers.

It is offered in a striking black frame, echoing the presentation of floral paintings by the 17th Century Dutch Masters.
