Born in Buckinghamshire, notably a painter of flowers and intimate London scenes, Niven was known for her soft, delicate touch. She studied at Heatherley's School of Fine Art under Bernard Adams and was admitted to the ROI (Royal Institution of Painters in Oil) in 1936 on the recommendation of H. David Richter. She remained an active member of that institution for over 60 years.

In addition, she showed her work at the Royal Academy (RA), the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (RP), the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street (RBA), the National Society of Painters, Sculptors, an Print Makers (NS), the Leicester and Wildenstein Galleries, and elsewhere, having a series of solo exhibitions.

Her work is held in a number of public collections, among them the Bradford City Art Gallery.

Provenance:

These paintings were part of a large collection of small works acquired directly from the artist by Grant Waters, editor of A Dictionary of British Artists; then to Thistle Fine Art, Rockport, MA.; then to the present owner.
