| A New England painter of landscapes and still
lifes, William T. Robinson was born in Somerville,
MA, in1852. He studied in Boston with G.
N. Cass and then, like so many young painters
of his generation, trained in Paris at the
famed Académie Julien, where he studied with
Bouguereau. He continued his studies at the
École des Beaux-Arts before returning to
New England, where he painted many of his
finest landscapes. The scene here, identified by the artist on the back of the panel, is Swain's Pond in Barrington, New Hampshire, painted in brilliant russet and vermillion shades at the height of its burst of color in the autumn of 1878. The painting is in pristine condition and presented in an attractive period-style American frame. Provenance: Jackson's International Auctions, "Important European and American Fine Art," July 17, 2007, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Lot 602.
